    Hi,

We are working on a brand new revamp of a very big site and plan to upgrade from 1.7 to 2.0, some of the addons are EE1 compatible only and the site is being very actively used by users daily right now.

Ideally, what we’d like to do is work in a clean install of 2.0 where we basically rebuild everything, installing EE2 compatible replacements for any addons that are EE1 compatible.  And then migrate the data from the EE1 site.

It’s going to take a while to do the rebuild, and meanwhile, we’re just about to launch membership products, using Membrr.  My concern is, the obvious headache with the data migration, uncertainty of whether we will be able to migrate order ID’s and all that from Membrr, etc etc.

Can you give me advice on the best way to go about this?  I’m wondering if perhaps we should rebuild the site with templates in EE 2.0, then upgrade the old EE1 site to 2.0, install the new add-ons and copy over the templates.  Then just delete the old template groups and add-ons that are not 2.0 compatible?

Another option is to use CSV exports and imports….

Either way, it’s a headache.  I’m wondering what seems to be the most successful method of updating a really large a site that other developers have used in the past.

Keep in mind, we’re not programmers or SQL experts so we can’t write scripts to do the SQL migration for us or that sort of thing.

    Thanks!

    Hi Elise,

Whew! I do not envy you 😉 Here is my advice on how to tackle this. Pull your current site into a development environment, either a local install or development server. Update that install to 2.x and then get all the add-ons replaced/updated/working properly. That way you will know exactly what to do to deal with the live site. Once you have the live site up and running on ExpressionEngine 2 with updated add-ons, you can begin developing the new site in new template groups/templates. That way everything will surely make the migration and you can develop the new site in EE 2

If you’d like, I can move this into Community Help to get a broader audience for you?

    Cheers!

I’d probably go down the same path as Dan suggested mainly because it avoids having to export/import data!

    Elise,

Did Dan’s answer help you out? That’s exactly what I would do as well.
