{exp:channel:*} tags not working after EE upgrade

I’m upgrading my site from expression engine 1.6.8 to 2.3.1 I’ve completed the upgrade process and replaced all of my {exp:weblog:entries} tags with {exp:channel:entries} Instead of outputing my content I get a random hash tag such as M00o93H7pQ09L8X1t49cHY01Z5j4TT91fGfr
This happens for any of the tags within the channel module

{exp:channel:info channel="contact_us" dynamic="off"}{channel_title}{/exp:channel:info}
```
gives M00o93H7pQ09L8X1t49cHY01Z5j4TT91fGfr
```
{exp:channel:entries}{url_title}{/exp:channel:entries}
```
produces M10o93H7pQ09L8X1t49cHY01Z5j4TT91fGfr
```
{exp:channel:entries}
 <h2>{title}</h2>
<p> {body}<br />
{/exp:channel:entries}
```
shows M15o93H7pQ09L8X1t49cHY01Z5j4TT91fGfr

Please help as this is making the site completely unusable.

I discovered the problem. Elsewhere on another template which was being embeded was a tag for a plugin which we’re no longer using since a version doesn’t exist for 2.0.

By merely having a tag for a non existent unrelated plugin caused the channel module to stop working.
