Can you share templates between MSM sites?

I have 12 MSM sites to create, but they all use the same templates with no modifications, is it possible to make them share a set of templates? Would make it easier when it comes to future template changes.

Just want to say that I don’t mean through embeds using site:group:template, i mean sharing an entire set of templates.

No - they are only shareable through the use of the embed tag.

    Thanks for the help, Mike.

Bohboh, does that help answer your question?

    Hi Bohboh,

Note that each new MSM site you add you get the choice of duplicating templates from another site
Also if you are saving template files as flat files you can copy the template folder and dump it in your MSM site folder and sync them up again

Does that give you some light at the end of the tunnel?

I use mountee for editing files so will have to continue using that and doing global find/replaces.
Lesson 1 - Make use of embeds throughout all templates that share from a single msm site, then make duplicates of the templates containing the embeds.

I am duplicating all content, templates etc. My BIGGEST gripe has been the lack of any real MSM compatibility with the structure plugin and no mention of this on their site. When duplicating content, it doesn’t carry across the structure content, therefore I have to go in and recreate each structure page one by one, that is approx 50 pages in 11 sites!!! To discover this at the 11th hour made my office a bit sweary. But that is a discussion for another forum. :D

Other issues i have hit is that I have to re-save entries with safecracker fields so that they update with the new file upload path.

    Anyway.. back to structure!

The one thing I would recommend when looking for MSM compatibility with add-ons is to assume they’re not compatible unless they explicitly say so instead of the other way around. If a developer has built MSM compatibility in and tested for it, they usually don’t forget to mention it. 😊
