    Hi Peter,

In order to quickly troubleshoot what’s gone wrong with your upgrade, I do think it might be best for us to take a look at it first-hand. Be on the lookout for an email from me.

Just posting a note here to let onlookers know that we’re working with Peter privately on this for the time being. I’ll post an update back here once we have something to share!

    Hi ExpressionEngine Team,

any news regarding this topic? I get the same error message trying to update a site from 1.6.9 to 2.3.1. I have restored the old version of a client site 5 times now and would need some suggestions what I could try. The update process does not give me any error messages, the config.php is updated to 2.3.1 and the database.php shows the correct settings after the update process. Funny enough, few hours before I updated a site from 1.6.9 to 2.3.1 on the same server/host.

    Thanks for some help,
    Wolfram

EDIT: So in the meantime I updated to 1.7.1 successfully and tried from there – same result :-(

    Hi Wolfram,

No, unfortunately we still don’t have a resolution on this for Peter just yet. We’ll update the thread once we have something to share, I promise. 😊

I am having the same problem with my local development server.

Because of past problems upgrading on my development server, I put off updating my live site until now. I figured all the problems would be worked out. Unfortunately, all I see are different problems. In this round, I have attempted this upgrade *five* times. This puts my total attempts at about fifteen tries. Since the size of my site is quite large, each attempt takes hours to run.

This error shows up in multiple threads on this forum. I don’t see many suggestions to fix it.

I have been a customer since the pMachine days. The difficulties in upgrading are testing my patience.

    Hi Jim,

I apologize for the frustration you have experienced when updating, that is certainly not the experience we want for you. can you give us a little more insight into your particular situation? What version of ExpressionEngine are you starting with and what version are you trying to update to?

When you say your site is large, do you mean that you have a large database to contend with? can you give us an idea of the size of your database? ExpressionEngine 2.3 introduced a large database check that offers and alternative shell script to run in order to update the database.

We are more than happy to work though any errors that come up and help you get your sites up and running.

    Thanks!

    Thanks for the response.

I figured out the issues. I had to completely empty out banned ips, censored words, etc. to avoid the preferences issue.

Ultimately in order to get my live site updated I had to take the site offline for most of the day (which was not what I wanted to do) download the entire database, run the update locally (to avoid timing out issues), and upload the updated database. (The database has over 100,000 entries, 3,000,000 comments, and 1,400,000 forum comments. )

I am glad the ordeal is over. Conservatively, I spent approximately 100 hours testing and finding solutions to problems (including an aborted attempt back in April). Anyway, it’s done.

I’m currently finding and fixing other issues that have cropped up. I do have a couple of questions: 1) Why no script to update modified member profile templates? 2) Why no mention about the templates at all in the update docs?

I’m sorry to hear about the experience you had, Jim, but I am glad to hear you’ve got things mostly squared away for now. With reference to your remaining questions, it looks like we’re already working on those with you in this thread, so let’s continue that discussion there.

We’re also working with PeterD on this one privately at the moment, so I’m going to close this one out. If we have something to share about Peter’s upgrade that will benefit others, I’ll make sure to update this post with that information!

Wolfram, would you mind clicking the button below to start a new thread if this issue is still plaguing you? It looks like PeterD’s issue was something specifically related to his site, so I’m not sure its resolution will help you much, and I don’t want you to have to wait much longer for help with your site.
