Hi, have a built a couple of EE sites, not had any problems regarding speed before but on a site that I’ve just completed the client is really beginning to get annoyed about the speed of the site, I’ve been going through the code adding disable custom_fields|categories etc… where I can, removing any unnecessary add-ons and originally I was using embeds and am stripping them out for snippets, but the client still isn’t happy.

I’ve looked through the forum and done everything that I could find to improve loading speed, but am now stuck - I was wondering if there was anyone available who could maybe have a look at the site and templates and maybe see if you can tell me where I could be going wrong.

The url is: http://www.oceanindependence.com/ - at the moment the sales pages have not been altered, most of the charter pages have and all of the rest.

I know that support for servers isn’t supported, but there was an issue with increasing the memory limit, their developer says that it has been done, but I was getting memory limit exceeded messages which indicated that the memory limit was at 64mb and doesn’t seem to increase with the .ini file - could the server have something to do with it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

    Cheers Jonny

    Hi jonnyrapp,

    A few questions:

    1) What version of EE are you using?
    2) Where is the website hosted?
    3) Are you running on Windows or Linux?

    Cheers.

Is this a shared server environment or a dedicated server?
How much traffic does the website get per day?

You should download and run Health Check to see if you find anything wrong.

Thankyou, have installed it, and the only error I get is:

Your PHP session_save_path is not writable.
    To fix: chmod 775

I looked in php.info and it says that there is no value, any idea what I should now?

Sorry am not very up on servers / php etc…

    Cheers

Thanks for the help so far, Mike!

Johnny, sorry to see you and your client are experiencing issues here. With the “Your PHP session_save_path is not writable” error, you’ll want to work with the host to resolve that. It has to do with PHP’s configuration.

When I loaded the site myself and watched it load, the only thing I really noticed loading slowly was the images. The page itself was served up very quickly. As you can see from this speed test, the only page elements that take a while to load are the images. The page size is apparently 2.9MB, which is a monster. That’s a seriously heavy webpage. In general, I would recommend trying to make those images a lot more efficient.

Are you on a shared server? That might also contribute to slower loading times. You might want to look into a server environment that is a bit beefier.

Just some things I noticed and would recommend taking a deeper look into. Anything else I can help with? Or would you like me to move this thread over to Community Help so others in the community can toss in with their suggestions for optimizing the site?
