Last Friday I updated to the latest Template Morsels. Then this Monday our servers suddenly started having unusual amounts of strain being placed on them. It’s enough the entire site is significantly slower than normal though so far it hasn’t brought things completely down yet.
At first I was convinced that it was the update to the latest version Template Morsels as that is the only recent change to the templates or EE that I can recall. But I’m less sure now.
While trying to diagnose the problem I’ve been examining the template debugging logs. At first I didn’t notice anything immediately obvious other than the fact that every step was taking a bit longer to perform than normal. The Template Morsel’s stuff didn’t show any expected obvious delays compared to anything else like I was expecting.
However, I did eventually notice that there’s a disparity between the Page Rendered time and the Template Debugging log’s final time. After the template finishes parsing (according to the log) there’s an additional .2+ seconds before the page finishes rendering.
I can’t recall ever seeing a discrepancy like that before and it could explain the problem.
If there’s something hanging AFTER the templates have already been parsed and it’s adding additional load for EVERY page in the site then that would explain why the overall server load has increased enough to cause issues.
So that’s the story. My question would obviously be if you’ve ever seen anything like this before and if there’s anything you might be able to point me at. I’ve obviously been speaking to Solspace as well and they haven’t been able to think of anything. I’m still thinking it might be related to the Template Morsels update but the disparity int eh template debugging log and the page render number is just weird.
I’d be happy to provide someone with login/pass and any further information off the forum. And I’d be extremely grateful for any help you could give. I’m at the point where I’m unsure where to go from here and having all of our sites suddenly extremely slow is something I’d like to solve is quickly as possible.
