We have two important announcements regarding ExpressionEngine 1.x.

First, as of December 5th, 2011, ExpressionEngine 1.x will no longer be included as a license option for new purchases. If you absolutely must start projects on EE 1.x, please .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) and we’ll work out a solution for you.

Please note that if you already own ExpressionEngine 1.x, download access will not be affected by this change.

Second, as of April 23rd 2012, ExpressionEngine 1.x will no longer be publicly supported. If you have mission critical projects that need support, we’re happy to continue supporting EE 1.x through private & enterprise support contracts. We’ll have public details on those options available prior to April 23rd, but if you want to find out more right now or are interested in particiating in the Private Support Beta (EE 1-2, MM), please contact .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

Thanks for the update.  With regards to canceling 1.x support and an option on private support, any information and insight as to what this is would be appreciated.

In many cases people here are consultants for the eventual end user who owns the site, and as it’s coming to the end of the year and budgeting is going on - or already over - to say there may be an additional expense warranted, whether to migrate to 2.x or to get a support contract, is information people will need sooner than later.

So it seems that the best/easiest way to continue to get public support is to upgrade to EE 2.x - but what about those of us waiting for things like the gallery conversion tool, who can’t update until it’s available? I’d have upgraded ages ago if I were able to - will gallery conversation be available prior to the end of 1.x support? 😉

I think you have supported EE 1 long enought, so it’s ok to focus the future, not the past.

    Yes.

Does this mean that after April 2012 there won’t be any more updates (bug fixes, security patches, ...) for EEv1?

I hope/assume that given there is not an insignificant number of users still on EE1, that critical security fixes *might* be supported. I think you’ll be out of luck on bug fixes though.

But on the whole, I see this a positive sign that EE2 will be in a much better state by the time they plan to discontinue free EE1 support. If nothing else it gives people a more concrete date on a suitable gallery conversion.

After April of 2012 it will be security updates only. This is pretty much how we treat EE 1.x right now in terms of development. The only practical change in April will be a change in support policy.

Will you leave the 1.x forum up so community members can support each other? I’d imagine there are a number of sites that can’t/won’t be upgraded by April.

    Absolutely.

Do you have any rough estimates for when the gallery conversion may be available? I suspect upgrading may be a bit of a time-consuming task in terms of things that need to be reworked, so I hope there’s some margin before April. 😊

No timeframe we can make public yet. But I will publicly say that if it gets out later than we’d like and causes undo pressure, we’ll extend support to EE 1.x sites that need gallery conversion. We won’t leave people high & dry due to an arbitrary date.
