database crashing, overload problem?

All of a sudden, select templates from my website no longer want to load.
Instead, I get an EE default ‘no search results’ page.

When I delete large chunks of code from those pages they load fine, telling me that it must be some kind of data overload problem.

It seems odd to me that it’s using the ‘no results’ page to indicate an error, but i was working on my search results layout when this happened—so constantly making searches from my simple search field was probably what pushed it over the edge.

I know that those were all very data-heavy pages and, in general, the website loads unbearably slow.
I’ve use ‘disable’ consistently with all exp:channel:entries tags, disabling everything except for custom fields—but my site (like most other sites) depends entirely on those custom fields. I also use a lot of Matrix and Playa fields. There are several types of relationships used and queried throughout and I’m also using a lot of field searching and random ordering, which I know ask a lot of the database.

Again, the site depends on all of this stuff. Is there some kind of magic wand that i can wave (or purchase???) that will lighten the load and allow me to do what I want to do with my data?

Any insight or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Website performance is clearly not my thing!

    Many thanks,

    Lauren

    Hi lcarelli,

Reducing page load and optimizing your templates can be a daunting task but in your case may be necessary. If possible you should reduce your use of advanced conditionals and embedding templates. If you do need to use advanced conditionals look into using the IfElse add-on as it does an excellent job of reducing page load. I would also look at caching your templates and tags as much as possible.

Some other resources for optimizing ExpressionEngine include a recent EE Podcast on Speed Optimization. You can read the transcript on that page to get the information faster than listening to the mp3. Also be sure to check out the Episode Links.

If after looking at the resources I’ve listed here you are still having page load problems, let me know and we’ll work on getting this resolved for you.
