My client came to me with an issue on one of their older domains. It is running version 1.5. They are a Super Admin and no longer can see any of the header links or information in the control panel. Seems like everything after the header displays just fine. There’s just no “logout” button, Publish, Edit, Admin buttons, etc.

I should also mention that the hosting account they are on doesn’t support the latest version of EE, so unfortunately upgrading is not an option at this time.

    HI Eric,

Do you know if your client’s host made any changes that might be affecting this? Are you aware of any changes that have been made?

    Cheers,

    Hi Eric,

Can your client provide you with a screenshot you can post here?
Do they have any extensions installed?
Do they get a browser error?

What latest version of EE doesn’t the host support EE1.x or EE2.x?

Can you experience the same issue if you login to the control panel?

Hi John and Dan, thanks for the response.

I’ve attached a screenshot of the control panel home page.

Looking at the config.php file, it looks like extensions are enabled but the only one I see in the directory is “ext.file.php”. There are no browser errors that I can see, everything appears to be working correctly, they just don’t have the header buttons in the control panel.

I tested the hosting server, Liquid Web, for compatibility with EE 2. It says that the version of PHP is incompatible. Looks like the host is on version 4. Contacting tech support they did say that the client is on an older server. They do have newer servers that are compatible but the client is leery of moving things over until the issue is resolved.

I am not aware of any changes that the host may have done. I’ve confirmed that there is only one Super Admin account, the same account the client uses, and the same login credentials they provided me. Apparently, according to the client, they hired another developer to login and make some updates. What those updates were I don’t know. But, they said that the issue started occurring after the developer made the changes.

I’m entering this situation late in the game so I’m not really sure of all that has been done. I did a full backup of the files and database just in case.  I’m not familiar with EE 1.5.0 and since it’s such an old version it’s more difficult to find relevant posts in the Forums or issues that may be similar.

I assume something must have been changed in a core file but I don’t have any older versions of EE to compare it to. The oldest version I’ve ever worked with is 1.6.2.

I’m also hesitant to do an upgrade without knowing the solution. Seems like going from 1.5.0 to 1.7.1 is a big jump.

    Hi Eric,

The fact that another dev made changes means we are shooting in the dark here. You need to if at all possible to get in touch with this dev to see what he has changed. Even have a look through the files and check the dates on the remote server to give a clue as to what files may have been changed

An update to EE1.7.7 would be the recommended route as it would refresh your themes etc but again not knowing what the other dev did may be an issue. Not an issue with the update itself but if the client requested functionality changes and these were done in the core then they would be removed

Is there any chance of even finding out from your client what they requested from the dev?

You could also replicate the site locally and do an update there and check everything works ok there

I agree John. The other dev’s work puts a huge variable into play here. Thanks for all the assistance and feel free to close this one out. I’ll try to find out what was changed and do a local upgrade.
