It’s my understanding that smart notifications show work as follow:
In any thread that a member is subscribed to, they will be notified of the first new comment that they have not viewed.

If my understanding is indeed correct, then these notifications seem to be broken. If it’s not, what is the additional mechanism at play?

I’m working on a forum installation and the notifications are erratic at best. I’ve actually noticed similar issues in these forums, not getting notified of new responses in a support thread. I’d like to test disabling smart notifications completely, but it seems to be only available per member.  Is there any way to disable this feature across the board?

    Hi Adam,

You are correct, Smart Notifications are meant to notify the subscribed person only once when the forum thread or channel entry is updated until the user visits the thread or entry again while logged in.

From what I can tell, there isn’t currently a way to disable Smart Notifications across the board, but that would be a great feature to have.

Given that your expectation of the Smart Notifications behavior is correct, what’s the actual behavior you’re seeing with them? Have you also checked to see if the notifications are getting caught in the email spam folder?

They just don’t seem to get there all the time.  I’ve had instances even on this forum where I should have received a notification but did not.  The numbers are low enough that it’s possible that there is another issue at play, like getting caught in spam as you mentioned (that was the first thing I asked the client when they brought up the issue).

Is there a simple core hack to disable smart notifications?

    Hi Adam,

We can’t advise on hacking the Core, but you are free to dig up the code on your own. As Kevin noted, this would be an excellent Feature Request!

    Cheers!
