Thinking of upgrading

    Hi,

I ran into a glitch on my EE 1.69. Tried to upload a photo but it wouldn’t work—first time ever this happened. Also, I’d like to have some forums. So it seems like this is the time to upgrade to EE 2.0. Why would I want to do this? How many hours will it take my webmaster to do the upgrade?  Is there somewhere i can read a feature less comparing EE 1 to EE 2? And,yes, do I now have to pay a licensing fee every year?

    Thanks,
    Bill Stranger

    Hi, Bill.

We have no way of knowing how long it would take your webmaster to upgrade. It depends on your use of third party add-ons, whether or not you have made any changes to the core code, etc.

I don’t believe we have an official feature comparison between EE1.x and EE2.x.

As for needing to pay a licensing fee every year, that doesn’t apply.

    See: http://ellislab.com/blog/entry/upgrading_paid_upgrades

One compelling reason to move to EE2.x is that official support will eventually end for the 1.x branch. Not now, but it will come.

Are you using galleries now? If you are, I’d recommend waiting a bit longer before going to EE2.x. That would be the main reason I’d wait - otherwise I’d recommend going to 2.x.

    Dear Sue,

Thanks for the reply. The code on my site (http://www.dharmacafe.com) is pretty simple. The only gallery I have is an art gallery but it has never been activated. If EE 2 includes one I’d be happy to jettison the custom one made for hours. Or if it can be imported, ok.

My webmaster has said it will take him 10-15 hours to do the upgrade. Does that seem to you usual, in in the ball park? How much do people usually pay for them?

If I wait, will EE eventually include an art gallery?

You can create a channel to display photos, but we will eventually have an import feature. It’s not quite ready.

It’s hard to tell if 10-15 hours is a valid figure. I’d rather have him/her give you a realistic figure, it may take less time, it may take more. As far as pricing goes, there is no industry standard. 😊

There won’t be a gallery per se, but you can do something similar many different ways. Does that help?

Perhaps, Sue. I wont’ know until I decide to activate mine.  Thanks very much, Bill
