Hi, I’m trying to modify the email notification templates for our forums.

Is this possible via the control panel? If not, which files do I need to alter and how?

Do this settings apply to all notifications or is it different for users which subscribe and moderators?

Please, any info on this would be appreciated. I’m confused.

In your CP go to:
Design -> Message Pages -> Email Notifications

Right, I do see those but it seems to ignore the email subject I set. The body works fine tho.

Also, I would like to list the forum category in the email, is that possible?

I changed my subject in the User Notification of Forum Posts template and could not replicate your issue of ignoring the new subject.

What version and build of both EE and the Discussion Forum are you using?

Only the following variables are for use in the email.

  {name_of_recipient}
  {name_of_poster}
  {forum_name}
  {title}
  {thread_url}
  {body}
  {post_url}

You will need to make a feature request for a category variable

Hey, we are using Expression Engine version 2.1.3 Build 20101220 with Forum Module version 3.1.2.

I can confirm that when changing the forum notification email templates from the control panel, the body area works, but the email subject is ignored. Currently, my “Admin Notification of Forum Posts” reads “{forum_name} aaa {title}” and I am getting emails like “[forum_name] title”.

I would like to be able to use variables for the forum_category name as well as the forum_section name. For example, given the following structure:
forum_name 1
  category_name 1
  forum_section 1
  forum_section 2
  category_name 2
  forum_section 3
  forum_section 4
  forum_section 5
I would like to receive emails like [forum_category] - [forum_section] - title.

I am posting this as a feature request now. The issue still remains tho about the title being ignored.

Can you upgrade to the latest version of both EE and the Forum module please and see if the issue persists.

EE2.2.2 and Forum 3.1.5
