As #eecms 2.2.x is currently shipping with a 1.7.x license too, can I acquire (for a nominal fee I’ll negotiate with the owner) this particular 1.7.x license and all the files directly from the ownner?

As I’m pretty sure most individual or companies are now only using 2.2.x license and personally not being able to afford the cost of this license, I would like you to confirm (or not) the 1.7.x license is fully transferrable, including rights thereoff to download free of charge futur “point” versions.

Thanks for your help (and sorry for grammar bugs as English isn’t my first language).

    Hi ebeauchamps,

If you purchase a license from a third party, they will no longer own it. If they have upgraded their 1.7.x license to 2.x, they can use *either* EE 2.x or EE 1.x but not both.

You might want to consider purchasing a Freelancer license instead, which you can use for your own use.

    Does that help?

Regarding the freelancer license : indeed it’s something I already considered, but I am focusing on 1.x version and the Freelancer’s doesn’t ship with 1.7.x and of course I don’t want to resell such a version!

Regarding your first point, I’ll try to think aloud : IF someone buy a fresh non-profit OR commercial license (not an upgrade for a previous 1.6.x or 1.7.x install), he/she will get a 2.2.x version and a bonus package including the 1.7.x version. Are you SURE you provide them with a single license number? that sounds strange to me. I guess I should ask you to connect me with this particular paragraph of the product license !

Sorry to be perhaps a little on the “heavy” side for this question…But as ExpressionEngine doesn’t want to sell EE 1.7.x version by itself anymore, why not creating a market for your former product? That could benefit developpers willing to make a few more bucks selling ee 1.7.x at a discount rate knowing that :

    1) it’s an “access” version, lowly supported now (sorry, but I am not that far away from reality on this…)
    2) it could get them/you a new client base

    Thanks for your comments.

We don’t sell the 1.7.x version directly, instead we make available EE 1.7.x for those who want to stick with EE 1.x for one reason or another. Often times it may be because they want to use third party addons that aren’t available for EE2.x yet.

As time goes by, we won’t offer or support that older version. That hasn’t happened yet, but it will eventually.

When you purchase EE 2.x, you receive a single license number. Not two different ones, just the single number that will work for either 2.x or 1.x.

    EXPRESSIONENGINE INSTALLATIONS
ExpressionEngine Installations: All ExpressionEngine license purchases allow a single “live” installation in a production environment and ancillary “development use only” installations as needed for that support the live installation (such as development and a staging servers). Additional installations require additional license purchases. If you have specific installation needs not covered by this license, please contact us (http://expressionengine.com/support).

If you are going to be reselling licenses, you’re better off with EE2.x as eventually there will be no official support for the 1.x branch.

As far as selling 1.x licenses go, I’ll mention it to Leslie Comacho this morning when he comes online.

    Thanks for your time.

Perhaps, one morning, we’ll discover a new licensing policy for EE 😊  (just relating to other threads on this site)
