    Hey CI Users,

I currently just signed up these forums looking for some guidance/help, if any one can offer that, that would be extremely awesome!!

What is the best way to get a developing environent set up to start using CI. I am fairly new to web programming and after a couple of days of researching what the new technology is and what to get familiar with, i found that MVC Frameworks are the way to go.

If any one experienced with this topic can maybe give me a helping hand with setting up an environment; ie: what tools I may need?. I currently have access to a MySql Database through a friend, but that is pretty much all I have. I guess I hvae the Model part of MVC down 😛.

Any help would be appreciated as I am currently a newb when it comes to this topic and hopefully after a bit of hard work I can get up to par with the rest of you experienced CI users!

    Thanks.

    Hi nass, welcome to Codeigniter!

I think the problem with your question is it’s very broad! But here’s some tips to get you started:

    1. First step is to setup your development environment. If you’re on Windows I suggest looking into WAMP Server. This contains apache (your webserver), mysql (your database) and php. This essentially will allow you to develop websites on your local machine, so you won’t have to push anything onto the web until you need to. WAMP makes it very easy to setup and get started.

    2. Next install an IDE. I recommend Netbeans PHP, it’s free and a very powerful tool for developing websites.

    3. Install codeigniter. Take a look at some getting started tutorials on the codeigniter site. Also checkout: http://www.google.co.uk/search?rlz=1C1SVEE_enGB417GB417&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=nettuts+codeigniter

    4. Never stop learning, everything you need to know is on Google. Check out this link for some great tips: http://495west.com/post/9885249988/the-wrong-question-i-want-to-learn-to-code-what?73331330

    seriously…

You waited exactly 30 minutes. You’ll have to be more patient than that when asking for free help from volunteers.

The user guide seems to be overlooked for whatever reason by new-comers. Spend a while reading it. It has a LOT of great info in it that will get you up & running very quickly.

Just add : Don’t forget that the CI manual in CI wesbite is a practical guide we can use. Also PHP manual in php.net, it’s a very good and detail php manual. If you are familiar with php native before learn CI, it’s not difficult to learn CI, just take some days , less 2 weeks to use CI in making a simple application. Keep learning, never easy to give up ...

    Hi!
Recently I posted a reply to similar question asked by another user in http://ellislab.com/forums/viewthread/199441/
One more advice I can give you is that you should think about a very simple project to implement in CI. No theory will give you what practice can give. I’m also new to the CI and currently I’m working on simple imageboard script. That’ll give me some practice with implementing a basic tasks in CI like users authentication, CRUD (create-read-update-delete) operations on database, files manipulation and so on. Try to think about something similar and then try to code it, try and try again untill you acomplish that task. Besides hints that Aaron John-Baptiste gave you as a reply to your question, you’ll need two more things: a tab in your browser with CI doc and a tab in your browser with google 😊 Good luck there.
