    Hi

We have a client that is looking to consolidate the management of multiple websites and we are thinking about recommending EE + MSM as the solution.

Currently the sites are hosted on separate domains (and possibly even different servers) - here is the scenario:

    site1.com (own hosting account)
    site2.com (own hosting account)
    site3.com (own hosting account)

Could site1.com be the master EE installation and from the control panel of site1.com could the client make changes to content on all three sites?

How do we best explain to them how it might work?

    Thanks for your time.

    Hi HN,

MSM sure can handle this type of situation. MSM extends ExpressionEngine to allow the same installation to power multiple website, whether they be at different domains, subdomains, or just subfolders. A site manager can login to the main site’s CP and then have access to all the controls necessary to manage all the sites. It makes it much easier to manage a set of related websites. (Related in that it must be all web properties owned by the same organization.) Sounds like you gathered most of that already, but it doesn’t hurt to repeat it.

One thing I should mention is that MSM does require all the sites to live in an environment that a single Apache process can access. If the sites are all hosted on the same server but under different CPanel accounts, for instance, that won’t work because Apache running on one site doesn’t have permission to access the files on another site. This part of the documentation might help more fully explain how this works.

Does this help give you a better understanding of how MSM works?
