This question may be related to a resolved thread.

Why would a member group not show up in the Restricted Member Group list in the File Manager Upload Preference page?  Some of my user groups are shown and some are not.  I searched the member group assignment page for some checkbox that would enable the member group but I don’t see anything.

    Hi, chrcollins.

A few questions first.. are you using any third party programs to create or modify users? On a regular 2.1.3 build 20110411 install, I can’t replicate the problem.

How many member groups do you have?

Can you tell us which version/build of EE2.x you’re using? See EEWiki:// HowTo Determine My EE Version

    EE 2.1.3 Build 20110411

I have 12 member groups (including Super Admin) and the missing member group(s) are the first 3 groups created after super admin. I added another member group expecting to see the first 4 member groups be missing from the list but that was not the case.  The new member group appeared at the end of the list and the first 3 groups where still missing.

    Hey chrcollins–

I’m not able to reproduce this either. Be on the lookout for an email from me.

    Hey chrcollins–

The 3 member groups following Super Admins do not show up in the Edit File Upload Prefs restriction list because those three groups are Banned, Guests (which you’ve renamed Beholders), and Pending. Those are special member groups that already exist with a fresh installation, and the member management tool uses them to handle various member management tasks like registration and banning. Visitors to your site that aren’t logged in are automatically in the “Guests” group so that you have finer control over what they can see on the front-end.

However, members of those 3 groups cannot have access to upload files, so those groups don’t appear in the list.

    Does that help?

Absolutely!  I don’t know why I renamed guest and not just created a new member.  Rookie mistake. Thanks!
