    Hi all,

EllisLab, I hope I’m not breaking any rules by starting this new thread, this is related to this ad http://ellislab.com/forums/viewthread/187781/

To the Australians out here, I’m having some difficulties finding developers and I was wondering if anyone had some tips. We usually advertise on Seek, but have only had one applicant (not suited for the job), in 6 weeks. Then posted on LinkedIn, and right here http://ellislab.com/forums/viewthread/187781/, but still nothing (besides people wanting to work from India).

We are in a pretty unusual situation; we’re located in Alice Springs (yes we have power and fast internet here). Yet we’re not your usual backyard company; we only started a few years ago, but we were finalists at the Australian Web Awards last November and I did pretty well at Sydney Amped in October… Now work has exploded, and we could do with additional developer(s).

Alice Springs is looked down upon by a lot of Australians; recent news hasn’t helped, but it really isn’t as bad as it looks, it’s a pretty cool town really. Not as dry as what most people think either, we had 700ml of rain last year (nearly a record though).

    - Besides Seek, are there any other websites that are worth using for job positions?
    - Authentic Jobs has some sweet jobs, primarily in the US, is it worth posting an ad there for an ON SITE position in Australia? (I noticed Newism posting there a few weeks ago, maybe it might work?)
    - Desperate plea: do you know anyone that might be willing to come to Alice Springs for an adventure?

    Thanks for all the help!

    What’s your timeframe? 😊

    As soon as possible really…

We have a 4 months backlog, and the way it’s looking, positions might not be filled for a while. But it would be really good if we could have someone by the end of June, early July.

    Thanks!

PS, we prefer to have people on site, no freelancers. Alice Springs is a unusual market, very different from the cap cities, there’s a lot of new stuff to learn here!

Are you coming over sometime this year?
At the moment we need someone quick, but might need more help in the future. Maybe it’s a possibility!

Looking forward to meeting you whatever happens!

    Cheers

Oh - it’s probably something I shouldn’t even bring up.  But the topic of what’s after our current adventure has come up, and one idea was to head to Australia (being a different country but still English speaking).

However we just today decided to sell our house and go full-time RV’ing here in the states for a while yet.  Just too much to see…;)

I too am an Aussie but kickin’ it with a company here in Adelaide. I was going to suggest http://director-ee.com/ but there arent many takers from Aus. You could reach out to Newism and quiz them on what their process was (I think the position was for designer - not coder per se) just to see if they have any pointers.

    PS. @Boyink - I hate you 😛

Hey @JohanD - Not sure you are going to find many EE developers who will be able to work on site in the Alice…but there are a few decent developers scattered around Australia.  I do sympathise with you though… we prefer people to work onsite with us as well (we are based in Melbourne)!

Some people to contact in Aus…

Thirst Studios (thats us!) - based in Melbourne - http://thirststudios.com/
    Newism - based in Sydney - http://newism.com.au/
Brendan Underwood - based in Perth - http://www.ipixel.com.au/
John Faulds - based in Brisbane - http://www.tyssendesign.com.au
Steven Hambo - based in Cairns - http://hambodevelopment.com

And obviously @Cheif who is in Adelaide! 😉

    Hope that this helps.

PS: @Boyink if you make it to Melbourne, drop me a line, and I’ll take you to the best coffee. 😊

Hey JohanD, we’re Adelaide based as well and worked with a freelancer a year or so back (Jack) who was doing some pretty good work with EE. You may be able to convince him to head up north… http://www.mcprodesigns.com.au/

Thank you all for the tips, will make some calls!

Awesome PHP ‘skillzz’ are not really required; as long as the front end skills are top notch (well, as good as possible here in Alice 😉).
EE is not complicated to pick up, so experience with EE is not a requirement.

The one applicant I was talking about in the first message was a Java dev, without any HTML/CSS skills, so I just figured I’d reach “qualified” people here.

Too bad it looks like everyone’s in the same boat these days!
