I followed the instructions in the User Guide to get my files in my public_html web root directory and did all the chmod suggestions.  I have not moved my system folder up a directory level.

When navigating to the index.php file in a browser, I get this error:

    ——————————-

    Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@<maskedforprivacy>.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

    A couple suggestions

    1)  Are you using php5?
    2)  Have you tired using the sever wizard to make sure the web server is compatible? (http://expressionengine.com/overview/requirements)
    3)  Are you using a htaccess file?  Have you tired removing it from the server?

When trying the ee_wizard, I get the same error.

    PHP is v.5
    There are no .htaccess files.

Did you review the server requirements for EE?  Does your webserver have all of the required features?

    Thanks for the help, mz91184!

Hi, BCPower - see these lines?

    mod_ssl/2.2.17 OpenSSL/0.9.8e-fips-rhel5 mod_auth_passthrough/2.1 mod_bwlimited/1.4

These are often content/security filters that can be extremely overzealous. I’d bet that is what is tripping you up.

Please go to your host and see if they can help identify what is causing those ambiguous Error 500s - they should be able to help you get to the bottom of it.

Let us know what you find out!

Thanks for the tip, Lisa.  However, I am a cloud server customer so there’s really no one to ask but myself.  :o/
I pay for my own cPanel license so maybe they can offer some help.

Lisa, could you suggest what I might look at in cPanel to check this out?

    Hi, BCPower -

Unfortunately I am not a server administrator, so my expertise is not in that area.  If you’re not familiar with server administration either, it may be worth looking at a more managed solution; this stuff isn’t easy, as you can see, and you’re going to need help with this one.

In fact, I’m not even sure you can disable those modules via cPanel, that may need to be done via shell.

Sorry, I wish I could help more, but this is an area I’ve always preferred to pay an expert to do.  Especially for server security reasons.
