Just wondering if EE’s database has any indexes applied to it out of the box or would I need to create them myself.

Yes there is. I would recommend downloaded and installing EE locally and examining the db yourself if you haven’t done so already. Creating your own indexes wouldn’t be supported I’m afraid but feel free to ask any more questions you wish.
