It seems that when you get routed to the designated 404 template, there’s no referrer? Is there a way to get around this? I’d like to have a “back” link on my 404 page that does not rely on javascript and instead, is based on the referrer.
This is an archived forum and the content is probably no longer relevant, but is provided here for posterity.

Hi, municipal. 404 pages and http referrers aren’t my strong suite, but I did find an excellent writeup that may assist you:
http://joviawebstudio.com/blog/guide_to_404_pages_with_expressionengine/
It mentions a third party plugin that may prove helpful.

Hi, municipal -
While there are some notes there for EE 2, what you see written (use weblog instead of channel) should work for EE 1. Some prefs in the CP may be in slightly different locations, if you need help finding them - give us a shout!
As for preserving the referrer; that would make a great feature request for a future change.
