This question may be related to a resolved thread.

I am trying to accomplish something similar to the post linked above.

My client feels that the Forgotten Password procedure is too confusing.

Is there any way to simplify the proces by either having the current password emailed to the members, or for the reset password link to take them to a screen where they can enter a new one for themselves rather than it being auto-generated?

I know the passwords are encrypted, so I have no idea how to do this.

    Thanks!

Hi, ramseymedia. You might want to glance through the offerings on Devot-ee.com to see if anything there meets your needs. Or perhaps a Feature Request would be warranted.

I’ve spent a couple hours on the forums and Devot-ee today, but the post linked to above is the closest I’ve gotten. Unfortunately, they didn’t share their solution :-(

Passwords are hashed in a 1-ways hash, meaning there is, in theory no way to unencrypt them.

The only add-on I know of that can send out a password in plain text is MX Notify Control.

This would only do so when the person is registering on the site though and not if they forget their password or lose that original email.

Might be something that helps out a bit though. Send the user their password upon registering and then it’s up to them to keep a copy of the email safe or face the consequences as it were.

    Best wishes,

    Mark

@Greg - Yeah, I tried to explain that to them . . . I think if there was a way for the “reset password” link in the email to take them to a page where they could just enter a new one instead of getting the second email, that would be a viable option. It’s over my head, though.

EDIT: How does it work when the new password is emailed to them?

@Mark - I actually found MX Notify Control in my wanderings yesterday and already set it up. It will be a perfect solution for new registrations. The main issue is that there are a bunch of members already imported into the site. They will have to use the Forgot Password link to login for the first time . . .

Hmm . . . I need to test if MX Notify will send out an email when users are imported . . . That would at least solve the immediate issue; ultimately, they would still need the Forgot Password process if they forget their password down the road

Hi, ramseymedia. I’m not familiar with that particular add-on, and in any case, support for it should be handled by the author. So I’m moving this to the CodeShare Corner so others can assist.

I don’t need support for MX Notify; I just was thinking out loud . . .

Wherever the thread needs to go is fine with me 😊

If anyone has any ideas on how to make this happen, that would be great, if not, the client has decided it’s not as big of a deal for right now.
