Stopping saving templates as files

I’ve taken over running a site from another developer. He had some templates saved as files, but I no longer want to do this (I’m updating templates using Mountee instead). If I just turn off the global “save templates as files” option, what will happen? What about if I turn it off for all my templates individually?

Basically, I want to keep all my templates in the database, but the newest version of the some of the templates is saved as files. What’s the best way to achieve this? Can I just turn off the global preference, or do I need to save each file in the admin side (to sync the file and DB).

I know this is slightly different in EE2, I’m asking specifically about EE1.

    Paul,

if it was me then I would make an off-site backup of that template folder. Then I would copy and paste back in the most up-to-date template code into each template in the control panel and save.
After I was sure all templates had been updated then I would disable the save templates as files option

EE2.x is easier as you mention as it has a sync file feature
