Integrating forums content into rest of EE site

Hi - On one site we want to more tightly integrate content from the forum into the rest of the site.

Examples are:

* 1 sitemap, with both blog posts, pages, and forum topics
* Dynamic list of forum categories on blog template

I saw this one example of querying the forum with a SQL call:

Is this the only option I have, or are there EE tags I can use to integrate forum content into the rest of the site?
