    I just got a fresh download of
    Current Version: 2.1.3 - Build: 20101220

    installing on windows 7 (64bit) localhost, PHP Version 5.3.1,  (xampp)

    Apache/2.2.14 (Win32) DAV/2 mod_ssl/2.2.14 OpenSSL/0.9.8l mod_autoindex_color PHP/5.3.1 mod_apreq2-20090110/2.7.1 mod_perl/2.0.4 Perl/v5.10.1

    First attempt at accessing it gave me this error

    Your config file does not appear to be formatted correctly.

    fresh install, changed “system” folder to something else and updated index.html

    Still same error. I made sure the “everyone” group had “Full Control” permissions.

    any ideas?

    Hi, spasmoid.

    Are you attempting to install into a directory other than /system? What did you put in for the value to the folder? Remember Windows slashes are different than Unix ones.

    I just changed it like so

    $system_path = './cp';

    I was under the impression that unix slashes are transposed to windows slashes by the PHP engine. In any case, changing the above value from a forward slash to a back slash has made no difference.

    My mistake, I saw Windows and leapt to the wrong conclusion. You’re taking about a local install using xampp..

    I use MAMP, and haven’t used xampp in a few years.

    If you run the Server Wizard, what does that say?

    I’m actually trying to this right now with MAMP and getting the same error about the config file. I made sure to set the permissions properly. What’s going on? Thanks!

    I did a quick google on this and it seems that other people have had this issue but no one has solved it. Surely it is solvable.

    I have found that

    system\expressionengine\config\config.php

    is zero bytes long (empty).

    and so is

    system\expressionengine\config\database.php

    This is from a fresh download. Are these files supposed to be empty in the distribution???? What gives?

    I believe they are supposed to empty in the distribution. I’m not sure there’s any more configuring to do after we set the permissions though.

    It is correct that the config.php file in a freshly downloaded copy of the software will be empty, the installation process populates it. Likewise with the database.php file. Say, wasserstrom, can you confirm the error message. Follow the installation steps through again carefully, report the exact message. Cheers.

    @Sue, re: ee_wizard,

    Everything says yes except for “URL segment support” (suggested).

    That sounds good. When you visit http://localhost/system/index.php, are you getting the same error message?

    No. I don’t get the error if I go into the system dir. It begins the installation wizard.

    Weird.

    None the less. Thanks!

    Hi spasmoid,

    Glad that you have this sorted now. The behaviour you describe is correct and as per the documentation you must point your browser to the system directory (or whatever it is renamed as) to start the Installation Wizard.

    @wasserstrom, how are you getting on?

    Cheers

    Greg
