This is the error message I received after uploading the install an running the site. I did rename the system directory and changed the index.php file.

    Any ideas?

    UPDATE:

After changing permissions to 777 on all files now I get a file not found error when I browse to the following:
    http://50.22.80.10/~eeadmin/index.php

But php is working fine because
    http://50.22.80.10/~eeadmin/test.php works fine.

    Need help, please.

    Thanks,
    Randy

Greetings Randy, and welcome to the forums!

Looks like CGI is breaking down on you, as I’m being forced to download your index.php file:

Looking at a curl request of that URL, I get a 500 error:

    > curl -I <a href="http://50.22.80.10/~eeadmin/index.php">http://50.22.80.10/~eeadmin/index.php</a>
    HTTP/1.1 500 Internal Server Error
    Date: Tue, 01 Feb 2011 06:41:39 GMT
    Server: Apache/2.2.17 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.2.17 OpenSSL/0.9.8q DAV/2 mod_fcgid/2.3.5 mod_auth_passthrough/2.1 mod_bwlimited/1.4 FrontPage/5.0.2.2635
    Location: /404.html
    Connection: close
    Content-Type: application/cgi

I’d suggest contacting your hosting company/system administrator to figure out the source of the 500 error, as I think it is due to a configuration error at this point.

    Greg,

Thanks for your response. I have forwarded your information to the support team at HostGator - the hosting company. But I am still a little confused as to why this might be a problem with them. I have created and installed Joomla instances with the same host by simply uploading the files, creating the database in cpanel, and running the install program. Why is EE having a problem?

FYI - I am a web developer who is somewhat new to the php world. But I am really hopeful about the prospects of using EE. Is it normally this difficult to install?

    Thanks,
    Randy

Well, I finally got it working. I just needed to delete and start over and left everything as the default and then it worked. There is one recommendation I have about your instructions. Maybe I am overthinking this, but I don’t think so.

When you say that the “system” folder can be renamed optionally, but recommended, and then say that the /index.php file must be updated to that new directory name, it automatically confused me in this way. Being a joomla user, and seeing that /index.php was mentioned, I assumed that calling the /index.php file was the first step in starting the installation. Had I waited until the next page of your instructions I would have seen that it was the /system/index.php file that kicks off the installation. So, I incorrectly assumed that the /index.php file you told me I needed to change, was the one to run first. My fault, but, I could see others doing the same thing. So, a note in that section of the instructions might be in order. Something like:

“NOTE: This is not the index.php file that will be used during the installation. The index.php file located in the system folder will be used on page 2 of these instructions to kick off the INSTALLER and IT DOES NOT NEED modification.”

Or maybe I’m the only one.

Thanks for your feedback. I’ll mention it to our documentation team to see if we can beef up the instructions.

Glad things are working again. Don’t hesitate to post again as needed.
