It will take 3 to 6 months to get the content ready so should I purchase a domain name now and stick a page up just to get it indexed or should I wait and launch the whole site when it’s finished?

What type of site are you proposing to launch?
I would buy a domin immediately to try to get SEO recognition.
I would also register and install Google Analytics to monitor your historical reporting progress and visitor sources.
As far as SEO is concerned I understand it is not good to have a “Site Under Construction” banner so you could create a simple web page with your elevator pitch and or blog detailing progress and expected launch date.
Maybe also start gathering emails and visitor comments and or suggestions.
