I want to show my website to certain members
before I put it live, but I don’t want them to access
    the control panel.

Is there a way to do this?

    thanks

I’ll typically setup template access and do HTTP authentication.

Though, you would technically have to turn the system on for that to work. But if you lock down all your templates, that might not be a problem.

    Thanks Joe,

Could you tell me how to do that?
    May be an example?

    Sure thing,
In the template manager, you will notice each template has an “Access” link. Click that and remove access to “Guests”. In the dropdown at the bottom, enable HTTP Authentication.
If you want to easily do this for several templates at a time, click the “Template Preference Manager” in the top right, which will allow you to set access to multiple templates at a time.
