If I have a category group assigned to a channel, and I delete the category group without changing the group assignments, a PHP error is displayed on the Publish page.
Also, probably related to this bug, if I go into the group settings for the Channel, “None” is not selected for the category group.

What version and build of EE are you running?
Are you using any add-ons?
Are you using Publish Layouts?

The latest version 2.1.3 Build 20101220.
I am using a few addons: Structure, Playa, Matrix, Taggable, and Freeform.
I am using Publish Layouts, but I noticed this still happens after I reset the layout and remove the category group.

I can replicate the problem even if I don’t have the other items you mentioned.
I’ve filed a bug report on your behalf. Note the workaround is to manually set the channel to have None for Category group.
Does that help?
