Related Entries using an alternative to the Title field

    Hello,

Unless I’ve missed something when searching, I cannot seem to find a way either natively or through plugin/extension/module to enable me to relate entries using an alternative field to the Title.

I’m creating an online store where we sell footwear. In this instance, all products have SKUs, and I would like to relate by the SKU field (a custom field within a Products weblog).

To ensure this works with our current back-office system, an item of footwear with 4 sizes has 5 EE entries: 4 entries are for the individual product sizes, and these are then related into the final entry which is the one shown to customers (this is the entry containing product image, description, specifications, user comments, etc).

I hope someone can help, before I pull my hair out!

I’m not certain, but have you taken a look at Playa? It’s a for pay add-on that might meet your needs.

Thanks, Sue - I did take a look at Playa before but wondered if it was too complicated for my requirements?

If others think it’s the only way, then I may need to give it a go.

    Any other suggestions guys?

Unfortunately, it seems Playa also uses the Title field from an entry. I really need a way to use an alternate (custom) field.

I guess this could be as simple as modifying the core files to display a different field in the relationship dropdown on a Publish page?

Related entries are based on entry_id, not title as such. That said, the title is shown when referring to the entries. Unfortunately I am not aware of another way, built-in or using third-party add-ons. Moving to the CodeShare Corner for additional community support.

Thanks, Ingmar. As I said, I’m guessing it may be possible for the system to refer to my custom field if the relevant system file is modified?

Yes, a hack might be an option. Moving to the CodeShare Corner.

So hacker guys and those more familiar with the EE backend - is this possible?  😊

Happy New Year! Quite enjoying being back at work as I’m getting to work with ExpressionEngine again, which I still love.

So has anyone got an idea if I can achieve this?

    Thanks,
    Justin
