Documentation bug

    Hi folks,

    On http://ellislab.com/expressionengine/user-guide/modules/channel/parameters.html#par_orderby, the text states

    The “order” parameter sets the display order of the entries. Setting options for this parameter include:

      * orderby=“comment_total”
      * orderby=“date”
      * ...

    This should say

    orderby="entry_date"
    rather than
    orderby="date"

    . This mistake is repeated in the example code for the orderby attribute at the same URL.

    Thanks,
    Ruthie

    PS Would it be more helpful for me to report documentation bugs here in the forums, or should I skip the forums and open a ticket in the bug tracker directly? I would gladly leave a User Contributed Note on the relevant page of the docs, but I’m not a “Lab Assistant.”

    It’s not so much an error as it is an inconsistency. Internally the channel module changes ‘date’ to ‘entry_date’, so in fact both will work. Though I agree with you that it would be better to change it to ‘entry_date’ in the docs as it would make things clearer for people who don’t know this.

    Ruthie,

    This is consistent with the rest of the docs. The orderby=“date” is used in the Channel, Comment and Category tags. It has been that way for all versions of EE1.x and EE2.x, regardless if it is changed internally as Wouter mentions.

    Why do you believe it should say ‘entry_date’?

    Post them in the forums then we can do a bit of triage for the devs

    Hi folks,

    Sorry for the delayed response, crazy week.

    Why do you believe it should say ‘entry_date’?

    Because the field’s label in the Control Panel is Entry Date, not Date. YMMV, but seems to me that the field label and field shortname should be consistent.

    For that reason, I’ve always used entry_date in templates; Wouter, I didn’t realize that date would remap to entry_date.

    You’re not alone on this one, Ruthie… For some reason using ‘date’ just doesn’t feel right to me, so I always use ‘entry_date’.

    Hi Ruthie and Wouter,

    Is this question resolved now? Would you like us to move this thread to the CodeShare Corner for further discussion?

    Cheers

    Greg
