I have read several posts and I gather that I am allowed to buy a license for a commercial site and also have a development copy where I would make changes/additions and do testing etc..  Quite often I develop on my own box at home and then move the changes to the production server once I have tested.  If I am installing a development copy, am I allowed to install it on a separate machine as I describe, or do I have to install everything on the same machine?

Sometimes I do not know where the site will be hosted, or hosting is not yet set up.  I do some development at home and then move the development stuff to a dev.sitename.com sort of subdomain for further development.

What if I am working on 3 or 4 sites at a time on my computer.  Do I need to install 3 or 4 copies of EE, or can they share the main library with one install in a development environment?

I have a designer who want’s to be able to offer CMS features along with our custom programming and I just need to know how I will have to set up my development environment if I start working on several sites at a time.

    Thanks.

    Hi, Conundrumb -

An EE license is not tied to a particular machine, site, IP, domain, etc.  So long as you use it on only one live site at a time, you are fine. We do allow an installation for testing/developing as well.

You will need separate copies for development so that you can easily export their database information and get it moved to production.

Please post back if you have any other questions!

So I can buy 1 license for a commercial site and then I can install it as many times as I want while I develop several sites as long as I buy commercial licenses for each site once it goes live?

If I buy the freelancer version to learn the ropes can I develop sites on my computer and then buy commercial licenses as I release them?

I see the freelancer version is missing a few features, but is it complete enough to build a site and then buy the license and launch, or am I better off buying the non-commercial version?

Hi, Conundrumb - within reason, yes.  It’s an honor system thing, really.

Yes on Freelancer upgrades, just make sure you have the license before you launch.

As far as Freelancer being feature-complete enough, it depends on what features you need.  If those modules aren’t going to be used on a project, then you won’t miss them anyway.

    Does that help clarify?

    Sounds good.

I definitely would only ever release a site with license in hand.

I suppose once I learn the ropes and I do launch a site with the commercial license, I could then install the full commercial code base on my system and use that for development of sites, once again, with the full intention of buying licenses for each site that I launch.

    Thanks for your help.
I’ll likely buy the Freelancer for now and work from there.
Hopefully I buy a bunch of licenses following that.

Yep, once you have a licensed customer, the testing/staging gets easier.

Sounds like you have a solid plan in place.  Please start a new thread if you have any other questions.
