I’m having some issues updating third-party modules and extensions to new versions.

If I have a module installed that I’ve been using, and I upload an updated file structure, the control panel doesn’t reflect the new version. I’m not able to tell if the module is actually updating, and a bug is stopping the version number from updating, or if it’s not updating at all. Unintalling and reinstalling modules seems to work, but then I lose all data associated with the module, which is incredibly inconvenient. This wasn’t how this process worked in 1.6, and it leaves me very confused.

I have a similar issue with extensions, though it is compounded by not being able to see the version number at all. A column of version numbers for extensions is conspicuously absent from the extensions manager.

I haven’t witnessed this at all, the modules tab shows versions and refreshes well upon installing updates. My general rule (NFI why) is to head to the /system/.../third_party/ and rename the modules folder by adding a “~” to it, upload the newer version and refresh the CP and good to go.

If it shorts out or fails, remove newer folder and re-instate original folder name and hit up the links to see what I missed (rare).

Failing that, to ensure you are working with the latest: Clear the cache then via FTP hit up the third_party/your_module and open up one of the files (they vary from plugin to plugin) but there will be a file that has the file version in it.
