Avatar and member photo uploads failing

I’m having an issue with users of my forum uploading avatars and member photos. When they do so it returns the error ‘upload_unable_to_write_file’ despite the images being within the dimensions and file size.

I don’t have any problems uploading images as a super admin however one of my fellow super admins has been getting the same error.

I’ve checked with my hosts and they assure me the correct folders are set to write-able (it’s Windows hosting).

Under membership preferences both avatars and member photos are enabled and the file paths are correct.

Also the permissions on the forum board show that members are allowed to upload (although I have removed the functionality to attach files to forum posts).

I’m running EE v2.1.0, Build: 20100810 with Discussion Forum v3.1.0

Feel free to register and try yourself on the forum: http://www.thefootballramble.com/index.php/forum/viewforum/7/

I don’t know if it’s related but the forum doesn’t seem to send automated emails either (at least they’ve never got through). Any help would be great - is there a setting I’m missing?

    Thanks.

    Welcome to the forums, ishmatt!

When they do so it returns the error ‘upload_unable_to_write_file’ despite the images being within the dimensions and file size.

Does that happen to all users and for all upload attempts, or only certain ones? To be honest this does sound like a permission error of sorts. Are there any corresponding log file entries?

I would suggest to tackle one issue at a time (or at least, one per thread: feel free to start a new thread for that one, please.)

Hi Ingmar, I’ve been away, so a bit late getting back on this…

It does seem to be a permissions issue as it is the ‘members’ of my forum that are unable to upload an avatar or photo. As a super admin I have been fine. However, as I mentioned above, one of my fellow super admin’s has been unable to upload as well.

I think I have checked the obvious permissions boxes but I may have missed something. How would I go about finding a log file on the issue?

I was referring to a PHP log file, but since this only happening to non-Superadmin users it’s probably an EE issue. Make sure your File Upload Preferences are filled out correctly, too. How large are the files you are trying to upload?

Unfortunately it isn’t quite only the members getting the problem. Whilst all the members seem to have it, one other Super Admin has had the same error.

The images being uploaded are the default Avatar and Member Photo ones - 100x100px and 50kb max size.

I just created some upload areas in the ‘File Upload Preferences’ section for them, but this hasn’t removed the error…

I can certainly replicate the problem you’re seeing. I registered and attempted to upload a valid 100x100 pixel .jpg file. No luck.

Also the permissions on the forum board show that members are allowed to upload (although I have removed the functionality to attach files to forum posts).

Can you change that back just for testing purposes?

I’ve had a further fiddle around and checked on other topics on here and have turned off ‘Apply XSS Filtering to uploaded files?’ and this solves the problem. Members can now upload avatars and member photos.

Is this okay to do or is it going to leave the forum exposed?

    ishmatt,

Let me just ask the devs on this one. I have never seen that setting affect Avatar and member photos before

This fixed our issue here too. I am hoping this is still OK to do? I am uncertain of this fix… -T
