I know in Expression Engine, you can assign members levels of access, but can you designate a specific area to a member?

    Is this possible?

Also, can you make groups? Can I assign one member to be the head of a group, and regulate who joins?

Please let me know if this is possible.

EE’s membership is entirely based around the idea of groups, so yes you can create member groups and assign members to them.  Templates can be mapped to groups creating member-specific areas.  I have a “family extranet” running on Boyink.com setup this way.

    Limitations:
    - One member can only belong to one group.
    - Being that membership is assigned to a group, you can’t have one login account be a “group owner”. You’d have to create a new group for that role.

Alright, so by the sounds of it, yes?

I’m sorry, I’m a bit of a noob with EE. I have done some work with Member Lists, but never with groups.

So could I have a group access level namely, ‘a.’ Specific a’s have access to specific areas, and are each the ‘head’ of a specific group.

    Is this possible?

There is no “head of a group”.

    There are only groups.

You could make a “group of one” that would have the “head of a group” permissions, but permissions are only ever assigned to a group.

Groups can be mapped to weblogs/channels or mapped to templates, and you can use template code to do different things depending on which member group the currently logged in user belongs to.

Alright, thanks for your quick response!

So I think what you are saying is that EE can’t do the ‘head of group’ that I was talking about, right?

Also, can you restrict members of a group to specific areas of a website?

Can one member have multiple roles?

    Yes and no.

Again, permissions are assigned to groups, not members. Read that again..😉

So you could just make another group with whatever permissions your “head” needs and assign your head to that group.

One member login can belong to one group.

If you have someone with needs for multiple roles you would create a new group with those roles.

And yes, you can map member groups to templates to create members-only sections of a website.

    Whoa! Thanks!!

    1. So say I have this group ‘a.’ But I want each member of group ‘a’ to have its own section of the website. Is this possible? Furthermore, I want other members, say of group ‘b,’ to be able to join a ““group”” that a member of ‘a’ has created. If they do, then they will have access to this area of the website that a member from group ‘a’ created.

    2. Instead of creating multiple roles, is there any way to have members be assigned to a group, then any member can sign up for another ‘group’ (I don’t know if ‘group’ is the correct term that I am talking about. I want each member to be part of about seven distinct groups. I think it would be impossible to create over a trillion groups) - Let me know if I should clarify this idea.

    Thanks!

    Yea..you lost me.

Essentially, and speaking at a very high level, the more and more community-driven your site is the less and less EE is a good fit for it.

Alright, thank you very much for a straight-up answer!!

      - Thanks again!
