Our client would like to use email address instead of username for login. Is this a possibility? Or is there some reason why we shouldn’t do it this way?
I was searching for an add-on that would do this but did not find anything.

You can certainly use the email address as a username if the user provides it, but there is no way to force this. Solspace’s User module might be an option worth looking into if you need the added functionality.

Thanks. I forgot the User module had that capability. I will give it a try.
