Hey guys-
Interesting issue I’ve just noticed. So I just (successfully, yay!) upgraded an EE1 site to EE2, and was exploring around to look for errors, get to know the new admin, blah blah, and went to the “members” area.. finding.. 1700 spammy site members.
Funny thing is that there’s no blog on the site whatsoever! I haven’t implemented ANY pages with a “new user” interface.
Where could these be coming from?

Do you have member registrations enabled? If you do, spammers are signing up just to get links in their member profiles. If you don’t need members registering, just disable it by going to your control panel, Members > Preferences and set allow member registrations to No. Then delete any members who shouldn’t be there.

There is always a default member register template at http://example.com/index.php/member/register/. As Robert said, if you don’t need new members consider turning this feature off.
