    I’m not able to specify subcategories using the “show” parameter in the exp:channel:categories tag pair unless I have the parent category included as well.

    1: parent_category
    -- 2: a_child_category
    -- 3: another_child_category
    will show nothing:
    {exp:channel:categories show="2" channel="products" style="linear"}

    will show parent and child:
    {exp:channel:categories show="1|2" channel="products" style="linear"}

    is there a different way of showing just the children of the current category that I’m overlooking?

    ender,

    I believe this was the same way in EE 1.x also. You need to specify the parent category id in the show parameter to show the child. There also as you probably know is only an parameter to show the parent only.

    This would be a feature request.

    There were a few category plugins for EE1.x but unaware if they have been upgraded to EE2.x yet.

    I couldn’t recall whether 1.x behaved this way or not. I’ve already substituted the channel:categories tag pair for a custom query so no big deal, just thought I’d mention it in case it was behaving unexpectedly.
