Although logged into the forums, and own a commercial licence, it seems I am unable to post to the Technical Support forum, don’t know why?
Please excuse my ignorance in this matter but I am still learning to cope with EE after my developer went AWOL some months ago!
This is a somewhat lengthy explanation but here goes…
1. I am running EE version 1.6.4
2. I previously had a directory named cache in my system files with subfolders db_cache, pages _cache, sql_cache etc.
3. Some days ago my host Media Temple had problems with my grid-server (very high file lock count) and many site went down. The problem has since been rectified.
4. Since the problem was rectified I could not access my home page http://www.quaywestliving.co.uk/
5. I could get into my site through a sub page but still then clicking my ‘Home’ page resulted in a 500 error message.
6. The response from Media Temple to my ticket was thus:
“In this situation it seems your caching plugins/modules were causing the issue. Since the incident your application has been caching the 500 internal Server error causing your site to be unavailable. I have renamed your caching directory to clear all the current cache and the site is now loading properly.”
My questions are thus:
1. The Media Temple engineer renamed the directory to cache.bak Will EE continue to cache to this newly named directory or will it still try to cache to the directory cache (which no longer exists)? Ie what tells EE the path to the cache directory and where can I find this path to check it?
2. I have been to admin/utilities/clear_cached_data/all_caches but then looking into the cache.bak directory all sub folders seem to be still full of data. This leads me to suspect the cache.bak directory is not truly valid but my site appears to be loading pretty quickly.
My guess is that I should just rename the directory back to cache and clear all caches again but I am hesitant to do this without clarification of my judgment!
Any assistance would be gratefully received.
