I think I know the answer here (NO), but I haven’t seen it discussed so would like confirmation please.

I have an installation of v1.6.9 (Commercial) on a shared server with root access, etc. (i.e. very few restrictions and tech support that will fill in any gaps). QUESTION:  is EE v2.1 sufficiently different from v1.6.x that it could reside on the same server in a buried directory (password protected) for the purpose of tackling the learning curve/preparation, etc.? That is, without the use of MSM.

The current license allows me to upgrade to 2.1 ($50), though I’d like to work on it privately before upgrading the site.

    Thank you.

Yes, this should be no problem.  You’ll need to make sure you set the cookie prefix for each site so you can login, though.

If you do run into problems, make sure you remove .htaccess mod_rewrites, as that can get in your way.

Hey, great! Lisa, thanks. I was under the impression that multiple instances of v1.6 didn’t play well, so assumed that may carry forward. Perhaps I misunderstood the situation previously.

Just trying to avoid a second hosting account for this or a local MAMP install for now. Still need to do the latter, but looking for a shortcut right now.

    Cheers,

    Dale

I have multiple copies of EE 1.6. and 2.1 on the same server, just different directories.  They each have a cookie prefix and I do not use mod_rewrite.

Thank you for this clarification, Lisa. I thought that I had read (and obviously misunderstood) that multiple copies of EE 1.6 caused problems, and frankly this seemed odd to me – so long as they were in different directories. Having read numerous questions posted about an EE development environment, and suggestions (I thought) against the practice of multiple installs, I’ve avoided it.

In this case, it will help me prepare an upgrade as well as start a new project with v2.1.

If you don’t set the cookie prefix, the login screen will just refresh. That’s the only caveat I can think of, Dale. =)

    Makes sense. Thanks, Lisa.

My pleasure.  If you have any other questions, don’t hesitate to start a new thread. =)
