I have the same site on local and on a webserver. Same configuration and version (2.1.0) and I assumed that after a clean upgrade the following message would stop to appear on my control panel (on the webserver’s version):

“An unexpected error occurred attempting to download the current ExpressionEngine version number. Please visit your Download Account to verify you are on the current version. If this error persists, please contact your system administrator”

And guess what… I’m the system administrator and have no idea what to do. Any ideas?

I don’t get that message on my local version…

This is a network / connectivity issues. EE can’t contact expressionengine.com to get the current version number. You can safely ignore this message, or simply turn off version checking.

If you’re like me, and these types of errors actually make you a bit nervous:

I had the same issue as described above (worked on one fresh install, not on another fresh install), I banged my head against the wall and then decided to look into the code.

It appears that the code caches the version results (so even errors get cached) for 24 hours.

I looked at the actual code and it seemed simple enough, so I cleared the cache (ee_version) file and then it downloaded successfully.

While this is an edge case, it seems rather odd that the failure scenario would cache, as it results in a false positive.

    Thanks ajlny.

Is this working for you now, Belarga?

Brandon, several months later and with a v2.1.3 upgrade still shows. The cache solution didn’t work.

    Hi Belarga,

Can you please contact your server provider and check that PHP scripts are allowed to access external files and that your firewall would allow this?

    Cheers

Started getting this message on Monday.  Our internet service was interrupted over the weekend, so our websites were inaccessible, but the connection was restored Sunday eve.  Monday I noticed we were getting this error.

    We’re on version 2.1.3 Build 20101220

Hi, Trapeze Software Inc. That error message occasionally happens when your site is unable to contact expressionengine.com to get the current version number. You can safely ignore this message, or simply turn off version checking. HowTo Turn off New Version Checking.

    Does that help?

Thanks Sue, turning off version checking removed this message.

Thank for letting us know. I agree, turning off this feature might make sense for a number of people. Please don’t hesitate to post again in case there’s anything else.
