Multiple Site Manager Domain Limits - Load-balancing - SLA

    Three quick questions:

    1) Are there any limits to the number of domains (sites) that can be managed through the multiple site manager?

    2) Are there any considerations, or changes that need to be made to the core code, for EE 2 to work in a load-balanced web server environment with a shared database using MySQL read slaves and a write master?

    3) Do you offer (or ever plan to offer) a corporate SLA option for your products?

    Thanks!

    Hi, Sean,

    1.  Yes.  The limitations are that all Sites must share the same owner, and they should be related.  MSM Sites share membership and Sites can not be easily split out of the MSM.  If you meet these requirements, we recommend no more than 60-75 Sites per installation.

The MSM may not be used for client sites.

    2.  We do not currently offer an SLA.

Please post back if you have any other questions.

To your first comment: what you’re saying is that we could not host a MSM site that is a client’s even if we were to pay for the licensing for that MSM site? Our biggest hurdle with the current EE 2 licensing is that we want to share content we create across all of the sites because that is part of our service offering to clients.  For example, providing monthly health content such as Cancer Awareness Month information.

To the SLA question: Are there plans for one?

Lastly, I’m assuming you either missed or purposely didn’t answer the question about load-balancing and MySQL replication.  Just wanted to follow up on that.

    Hi, Sean,

You could host a site for a client on any server you want.  But that client needs their own full license and separate installation.

It sounds like you’re doing something a bit different, can you please email sales with details about this?

As far as what the future holds for SLAs, it is something we are aware that people want, but that is all that I can say about it at the moment.  We recommend basing your decision on what is available now.

I just missed 2 somehow.  EngineHosting runs all their sites in a fully load balanced situation, so it is possible without any modification to EE.  The load balancing should be invisible to ExpressionEngine.

Lisa, as always, thanks for the information.  Hopefully you folks can find that top tier product offering for enterprise customers soon, because there are a ton of us who work for corporations in our day jobs (with sometimes difficult, so-called enterprise, CMS solutions) and work in EE for our freelance clients.  It would be great to marry the two.

BTW, for now, the company I work for owns all the sites (600+) that would be hosted on EE.  So licensing in that sense would not be an issue.  It’s only an issue (per your post) if were to host anyone else’s site on that installation.  I’ll contact sales to finish the conversation.

    Thanks!!
