    Hi all,

Noob here, I am about to be tasked with creating a Shopping Cart website soon for 100+ products. I was wondering how I would go about this in Expression Engine 2.0? I do not want to use anything like FoxEE cart. I want the full site to be hosted on our server.

If anyone could suggest shopping cart software and a theme I would appreciate it. I am happy to edit a theme/template as this will be the first time I use EE. Also, if you could suggest any additional extensions/addons/plugins/whatever that are popular it would be helpful.

    thanks

Right now to my knowledge the only ecommerce capabilities in ee is the Simple Commerce module that comes bundled in (with the paid versions of the software not the core). However the Carthrob addon has stated that they are currently working towards a 2.0 compatible release, I don’t know when that will be though.

Are there any sites that sell EE themes for this module? (and maybe supply demos or showcase other users) I would like to see what the module is capable of before creating a website.

just out of curiosity gemmes, why do you specify a self hosted system rather then a hosted system like FoxyCart?

You might be interested in http://www.acmecart.com which allows for self hosted or hosted solutions as well as templates for instant website deployment and will be available for EE 2.0 as well as wordpress, joomla, drupal, movabletype and more coming this summer.

I do not want to pay monthly fees to host a shopping cart and if the product does well even more money. I would prefer a one-off additional cost. Although I am hoping to skin a shopping cart theme just now I may want to add additional functionality at a later date and I dont want to be stuck with a system I cannot configure myself.

Also, I remember checking out FoxyCart about a year or more ago and I thought it had it security flaws. I believe all I had to do was edit one of the hidden input values to change the price. I could be wrong and I may have it confused with another service. It seems to be the only EE option. I may use end up using FoxyCart. I will give it another look.

understood, at first monthly fees seem cumbersome but after I weighed out the cost over 5 years a service like FoxyCart saves you over $3,000.00. And FoxyCart is fully integrated and customizable to boot.

In terms of security foxee uses XML cross check to secure URL hacking and FoxyCart is on the process of implementing HMAC for even more security, this will be available with their next store.

This is a good read for understanding the in and outs of hosting your own cart:
