    Hi,

I have been running my site in my host’s PHP 4.4.9 environment (EE 1.6.9). Because I’ve read/heard that EE runs best on a PHP 5.x + environment I asked my host how/if I can upgrade. They said that in several months they would be upgrading to PHP 5.2.13 system-wide but if I wanted to upgrade my site that adding a certain line of code to my .htaccess file would install the newer version.

I did that and it upgraded to PHP 5.2.13 but my links/url’s aren’t working. I click on a link, the correct URL shows but the page doesn’t display (just stays on the home page).

If I remove the .htaccess file it reverts back to former PHP version and all works fine.

What’s up? Anyone know? I’m concerned if they do the system-wide upgrade my links won’t work then if I don’t resolve now.

    Thanks for your reply.
    Pete

    Hi Sue,

Thanks for the link. No, I hadn’t seen that info - I tried the directions, Force URL query strings to yes, didn’t work. Added “2” to the

    $qtype

variable as well and that didn’t work.

I am at the end of my rope with this Host provider. I don’t want to put you in a position of recommendations for hosts. But can this question be answered: would things run “better” with EE if I hosted with iPage, FatCow or DreamHost? (Basic packages).

I’ve been asking them questions, they’re all running the latest PHP version.

    Thanks for your help.

    Alas,
    Pete

Do you’ve got a link to the site? As to hosting recommendations, we can’t really recommend anyone apart from our sister company EngineHosting. There are quite a few other quality hosts out there, though.

Fully understood (on the Hosting topic).

I’ve restored everything back to it’s former state but here’s the link:

    My website here.

    Thank you,
    Pete

[Mod Edit: Removed another link for security reasons]

pychap, did you also try setting

    $qtype = 1;

in your main index.php? If that doesn’t work, upload and run our Server Wizard on that host in PHP5 mode and let us know the results.

    Hi Brandon,

Tried using “1” with force querey in PHP 5.x mode and still didn’t work.

In PHP 5 mode, I ran the wizzard and the URL Segment Support is not supported. Everything else was.

What do you mean here? What specifically is in your htaccess file?

This is what in their documentation (posted here) they instruct to put in the .httaccess file:

    AddType x-mapp-php5 .php

Here’s something else to read about http://ellislab.com/forums/viewthread/157552/

Don’t know if that will help you make up your mind.

    A-ha!!

This whole thread has been filled with “light-bulb” moments. I have several sites on this and another on a 1and1 site and many of the problems I’ve described above and others not mentioned appear to be directly related to the replies discussed/linked above.

Thank you Sue and all above for walking me through this. I’ve reached my conclusion.

You may close this thread if you wish unless you wish to add something but I’m satisfied.

Thank you again for all the input, its been very, very helpful.

    Regards,
    Pete
