Hi all
Forgot password tool does not work on admin login page - it says it has sent the mail but I never receive it, but communicate tool does work and is able to send mails. How can I troubleshoot this?

Richard, have you tried sending mail to your own email account from inside Communicate?
Which version/build of ExpressionEngine 1.6.x are you using? You can find that out at the bottom of any control panel page.
The current version of the 1.6.x branch is 1.6.9 and the build is 20100430.

Hi
I sent mail to my own email account via Communicate. Ruled out spam issues etc.
Finally turned to SMTP method and it worked. But this does not solve the mystery - why PHP mail works on Communicate but not on Forgot Password. Are there any differences between the two - I would assume they use the same email class.

Yes, there are differences between SMTP and PHP Mail—the former is using a separate mail server, the latter a locally installed MTA. It could be that your local server does not accept certain kinds of email, unless they come from a trusted sender, eg, thing like that… if it’s working now I wouldn’t worry too much about it.
