Images Squished

ok so that is the technical term!

I’ve been looking at my site, since I’m off on my RTW in about 4 months (really excited) so want everything squared away.  I noticed today that the images in the image gallery are squished. (I’m sure they’ve always been that way I just didn’t notice.)

It seems all the vertically aligned images are constrained to horizontal format (if that makes sense) causing the images to look terrible.  Well more than they normally do anyway.

I think this is the code in question

If you want to see what I mean the gallery in question can be found here:

    Gallery photo

of course the thumbs are like that on the index page for the entire gallery as well which makes it all even on the page so to speak but the photo’s look bad.

Is there a way to change the code so the images are in proportion rather than squished like that?

Your images appear that way because originally the images are sitting at various resolutions, the majority I see at a more portrait scale - where as you are forcing a constraint on the images at a landscape scale, causing all portrait images to look - well - squished.

Also I notice that some of your images are mighty large in resolution, therefore taking a while to load. Optimisation is always a key to performance and page load times.

Have a look at ImageSizer for EE 1.6. It’s a fantastic piece of kit which resizes your images at the scale you want them too.

For your images you would probably want to supply the width parameter which will keep your images intact. However, your portrait images will make your page look mighty long - so perhaps force a 4:3 ratio - and portrait images will be cropped from the middle.

Your code will inevitably look like this:

This will work a treat for all your image thumb requirements.

Thanks for the input I’ll certainly take a look at ImageSizer.  As for the different sizes of the images I realise that is an issue.  Deleting them all and redoing them is in my ‘to-do’ list.  However reloading all those images using the photo gallery module, as I do, will take an age so is well down the list. er, and I have to admit that because I do not know what I am doing in that regard (as in the resizing thing) am not sure the results would be better.

Am going to try and work out exactly what size image is required for the images to fit properly on the site in the first place so that it works and make sure I upload them in that size from now on.  I’ve always struggled to know what that is though since various programs seem to use different ways to express that.

Maybe its what you’ve said and I’m not getting it but is there a way so that the photo is in scale regardless of whether it is a landscape photo or portrait?

I do not necessarily like it that the portrait shots are forced into landscape shots.

The ImgSizer plugin is available so you don’t need to resize all your images and reupload them. You just put the tags in your code as in the example above, and it dynamically resizes them and caches them for performance reasons.
