This seems to be a bug, but it may just be how EE works.

I’ve got a sub-category in the gallery module with an ID of “1”. It’s parent category has an ID of “12”.

I want to display images from category “1” and all the other (future) sub-categories, by setting the category parameter to the parent category, but it doesn’t output any of the images assigned to the sub-categories only ones assigned to the parent category directly.

And idea why it’s functioning this way?

This is indeed normal behavior.  There was a small extension written to provide this functionality, though I have not tested it. Perhaps it will do the trick?
