Also, would it work for sale of advertising space on my website?

In 2.0, the SCM does support recurring subscriptions; however, in 1.x it does not. For that FoxEE may be a better option.

You could create each space as an entry and use the simple commerce module to purchase it, certainly. CartThrob may also be an option for your project.
