All of a sudden, one of my sites has slowed down drastically. Pages take anywhere from 10 seconds to 3 minutes to load. This is on the front end and the back end. The browser hangs and renders nothing and then finally renders everything in less than a second.

Here is a typical page result:
“This page was rendered in 118.6550 seconds with 34 queries.”

I have not made any updates in weeks and this just started. It’s probably not the host (rackspace cloud) since all of my other EE sites on there are fast and static pages outside of EE load fine. All my other sites are on the same account.

I optimized everything according to the guide at http://expressionengine.com/wiki/Optimize_EE/

I’ve checked all my permissions on all my folders and emptied the cache folder as well.

I’ve looked at all the other posts on slow performance and tried everything in those as well, including disabling my 4 extensions (that took about half an hour).

I’ve ripped all my hair out.

Any ideas on something I’m missing? I’m still running 1.6.8 and I will upgrade but that can’t be it, can it? All my sites run that version and are fine.

Have you talked to your host? If this appeared all of a sudden and you made no significant chances to the site I would expect a server issue of sorts. Perhaps the db server needs to be kicked back in shape, so to speak?

I did before I went through all these fixes and they said it wasn’t them. And because my other sites are fine I assumed it wasn’t. But who knows how many database clusters (or whatever they call them) there are. I’m going to try again. Thanks.

Can you try to turn on template debugging? That should give us an idea where that time goes.

It does look like the database is the main culprit. Have you tried putting a limit parameter on your exp:weblog:entries weblog=“news” tag to see if that significantly speeds it up?

I’d also try an optimize and repair on all of your tables, after backing them up, of course.

I added a limit of 10 to the news but that didn’t make a difference. There are only 3 news stories anyway. I also tried optimizing and repairing but I couldn’t do a repair because the message returned was “The storage engine for the table doesn’t support repair”.

I’m still waiting for my host to get back to me.

I’d ask the host to repair & optimize your tables (and make sure you have permission to do so).  Definitely sounds like extreme latency between the database server & the web servers, if they are separate.  If not, sounds like MySQL is not feeling well & slow!  😊

We apologize for the issues your site has been experiencing.  The issue was due to the resource pool for the MySQL server that your database resides on being over-utilized.  The root cause has been corrected, and you should not experience any further issues due to the identified problem.
