I’d like to show recent forum topics in a standard template (homepage). Is it possible to use a tag such [if_is_new] as on regular forums? I’d like to mark unread posts on my homepage. Maybe something different?

Yes, I know this. But the question is how to show only unread posts/topics on the homepage? On the forums there is {if_is_new} tag and you can mark different (bold for instance) new posts if available. Is it possible on a regular, non-forum template?

Not with the built in functionality. You could possibly write some custom code to do this, but that would be a HowTo topic. I could move this thread there, if you like.
