Hi everyone, just thought I’d throw this out there to see what your preferred solution is to this situation…

X number of top level pages (which can be added to) that will have X number of child pages (not all will have child pages though).

In the past I have used 2 main methods.

    1. Create a section (weblog) for each top level page have all entries in that section constitute the child pages. Barring the first one which will be used as the top level page. Although this makes it tricky to add more top level pages.

    2. Categories for each top level page and entries within that category as the child pages.

I haven’t had to do it in a while so I want to make sure I’m not missing a trick!

    Many thanks

I recommend buying the Structure module and using that to create a hierarchical page structure.  It also provides tags for rendering navigation hierarchically in unordered list format, either full nav from the top down or sub-nav for a section.  It also provides breadcrumbs and some other handy features.  It is essentially a replacement for the Page module that let’s you post either one entry per page or have pages with lists of entries, providing a very nice user interface that papers over the differences between the two making it very easy for a client to use once you’ve delivered the site.

It’s commercial, but very well worth the price.  Note, however, that they don’t have an EE 2.0 version available yet, only 1.6.8.

Here’s a link to their site:

Thanks Kellet, I was thinking about using Structure. The short dev time and lack of funds (I know it’s only cheap but…) has me steering away from it.

I might give it a try but I’d still really like to know how everyone copes with this issue without the aid of a paid add on.

    Cheers

Jeepers! I was expecting a flood of responses to this. I think I’m going to go with the first method I mentioned then. Categories scare me : )
